State Licensure Efforts Update

AKSRT Licensure Committee Alert

We are asking for your assistance once again to contact your legislators to ask them to support our licensure efforts.

It is important that the legislators hear from radiologic technologists and others from their districts to show that there is strong support for the legislation. This is an election year for the Representatives, an opportune time for you to address your concerns with the individuals running for office.  A copy of the licensure bill can be found on the Alaska State Legislature internet site. Go to the Home Page and click on the Bills and Laws tab.  Do a search for HB 384 under Bills search.

Listed are talking points to consider using when contacting your legislator:

·         Currently, anyone in Alaska is allowed to take x-rays.

·         The legislation is needed to protect patients from inappropriate and harmful exposure to radiation and make the health care system more efficient by ensuring high quality imaging.

·         Unqualified operators of equipment emitting medical radiation can increase the patient’s exposure to radiation, increasing the possibility of cancer, degradation of the immune system, cataracts, chromosomal mutations, and damage to developing fetuses in pregnant women.

·         When unqualified personnel perform radiographic examinations there is a greater chance of loss of diagnostic information from poor image quality which could result in a misdiagnosis.

·         It has been demonstrated that the risks of receiving excessive or accidental exposure to ionizing radiation can be substantially reduced through adequate education of operators.
